The energy tonight had to be the best. I thought the Midwest had it, but I think the East Coast would forever have the best energy. My show ended a few minutes later than usual because I had brought a fan that had finished chemo onto stage. I signed her shirt, took a picture with her, and allowed her to stay on stage while I finished the last song of the night.

It was fans like her that made me keep my head in the game. Whenever I wanted to give up and retreat to my home, it was fans that reminded me that this shit was bigger than me. She could have been anywhere tonight celebrating, and she was at my show showing me love.

“I don’t know how you do it, Maliek. You manage to top every show, and this show was no different. The energy out there tonight was out of this world.” Marcus went on singing my praises as I eyed Sade who was laughing with Benz.

Marcus could have asked me what he had just said, and I wouldn’t have known because my eyes were locked on one person.

Her.

She had all of my attention in this moment, and he would have to take a number and circle back to get a real conversation out of me.

“Benzy, you have to call her… you can’t just ignore her,” Sade tossed her head back and laughed.

Benz wasn’t a man of many words, but somehow Sade had managed to pull the words and a smile out of him.

“Benzy?”

They both stopped laughing and turned to face me. “Your show was so good… I don’t know if the New York show or this one was my favorite.” She smiled and reached up to hug me.

Sade didn’t know what her little arms around my neck did to me. Even as tall and big as I was, her little body pressed against mine brought me comfort.

“Thank you. Did your family—”

“Maliek! I swear I am your biggest fan… my parents love your music, and my dad said it was a rite of passage that I knew your music… can you sign… dang, I don’t have nothing for him to sign.” A boy taller than Sade ran over toward me.

I assumed this was the voice I heard that had got overly excited when I was on the phone with Sade earlier. Sade let go of my neck and stepped back so her nephew could have my attention.

I assumed the woman and man behind him that were equally excited were his parents. “Hey man, what’s your name?”

“M…Marcus,” he stammered.

“Word? My tour manager’s name is Marcus, too. Your aunt never told me that you were a fan.”

He side-eyed his aunt quickly. “She never told me that she knew Maliek Dubrow, so keeping secrets seems to be on theme for her.”

“Marcus!” Sade pinched her nephew while laughing.

I turned my attention to his parents. “So, these are my in-laws?”

From how bright pink Sade’s cheeks were turning I could tell that she was trying hard not to blush and was losing.
